Summary

The project "Other images" includes the creation of new video teaching material by lecturers for the range of topics "Gender, body images, sport, disability and integration" and their application in the obligatory seminars as an integral component. The aim was the setting up of a video pool containing diverse voices, of those affected, activists and experts.

Students also learned to plan, coordinate and execute a video production and were thereby able to extend their skills of independent and self-managed learning. At the start of the seminar basic knowledge on interview techniques, camera operation and editing at the computer was taught. The students supplemented a wiki with the experiences they made across semesters. Included were tips & tricks on video filming and production. An online knowledge repository on the technical, conceptual and organizational aspects of video interviews was created. The production of the videos was part of the grade.

In the project over 30 interviews with actors from the above-mentioned range of topics was produced. This video series was prepared for use in teaching using a thematic guideline. The student video work were part of a course so that the students themselves could prepare and execute thematic fitting video interviews. The videos and the accompanying material can be used by other lecturers in order to allow their students to get an insight into the personal experiences made regarding this topic.

Experiences made by the lecturer

The students showed a lot of interest for the e-learning supported course as well as their own production of video interviews. Connected with this, though, was the challenge of self-organization. If the technical obstacles were seen as being too large, then some of the students were scared off from the very start due to the excessive time demands. The self-conception of these methods should be disseminated even more (e.g. development of media competency through courses for general career preparation "Allgemeine Berufsvorbereitung (ABV)").
